Okami's initial sales were "huge failure", says director Hideki Kamiya
Okami was a “huge failure” in terms of initial sales, director Hideki Kamiya has said. Had it been more successful, its developer Clover “would have probably continued” – rather than shutting down the following year.
Kamiya discussed the development of Okami with Ikumi Nakamura for the YouTube channel of her new studio Unseen. The pair worked together for the first time on the Zelda-like adventure game.
Okami has received plenty of cult acclaim since its release on PS2 in 2006, but was one of only a handful of games made by the Capcom-owned studio before it was dissolved.

Actor David ‘The Hoff’ Hasselhoff – known for his roles in 80s TV series Baywatch and Knight Rider, as well as his music career (I still get Jump in my Car stuck in my head from time to time) – is the new face of an initiative which aims to fight climate change with video games.
It’s called Make Green Tuesday Moves (MGTM). On the first Tuesday of each month, participating studios will launch a collection of ‘green’ items within their games, with these items being exclusive to the movement. MGTM will then invest proceeds from these items into “fully certified sustainability projects by not-for-profit digital platform PlanetPlay”.
And, this month, it is all about that Hoff DLC, with other celebrities expected to follow in subsequent months.

Read moreFormer Humble Games staff found new indie publisher
Ex-Humble Games staff made redundant in July have formed a fresh indie publisher, Good Games Group.
The company, lead by former Humble Games bosses Alan Patmore and Mark Nash, will now work with some of the development teams that its staff previously collaborated with back at Humble.
Intriguingly, this means also working with Humble Games owner Ziff Davis once again – just months after its layoffs left the entire Humble Games team out of work. (Ziff Davis is also the parent company of IGN Entertainment, which owns this website.)
Back in July, Humble Games staff reported that Ziff Davis had made all 36 team members redundant. At the time, the plan was reportedly for any remaining publishing projects to be finished by an outside consultancy firm, The Powell …
Read moreMetal Gear fans dare to hope as David Hayter teases return to "role I've not played, since…"
David Hayter, the gravelly voice of Metal Gear protagonist Solid Snake, has fans pondering an apparent return to the role after posting an enigmatic new tweet.
Hayter was famously ousted from the role in 2013, after Metal Gear creator Hideo Kojima – always one to be swayed by a celebrity – controversially decided to replace him with Sutherland for Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain. Long-time fans, it’s fair to say, were not particularly happy with the move, and Hayter has made no secret of his disappointment in the years since, saying the switch was handled “pretty badly and I’ve got no particular love for Kojima.”
Now, though, Hayter has sparked renewed excitement among fans with a fresh post on social media, teasing, “I was in the booth today. Playing a …

Hi-Rez Studios, the developer behind Smite 2 and Paladins, has announced it’s laying off an undisclosed number of employees in order to “ensure [the company’s] long-term success”.
Hi-Rez CEO Stewart Chisam announced the job cuts in a lengthy statement shared on social media, saying the layoffs – instigated as part of an “internal reorganisation and reprioritisation” – will “disproportionately impact those in marketing and publishing roles”. Staff at Hi-Rez’s Evil Mojo, G&A, and Titan Forge divisions are also affected, with Chisam saying these latter cuts will “disproportionally affect our team working on cosmetic skin content and system features.”
Chisam went on to acknowledge the “real human impact” of the layoffs, adding, “Each impacted individual is a …
Read moreHere's why Nintendo ditched Link as Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom protagonist
Nintendo has provided fresh details on why Zelda was chosen as the protagonist for the series’ latest game, Echoes of Wisdom.
In the latest Ask The Developer blog, series producer Eiji Aonuma discussed the game’s development with Nintendo director Tomomi Sano (the first female director of a Zelda game) and Grezzo director Satoshi Terada.
Initially, Link was to be the protagonist in Echoes of Wisdom, Aonuma explained, but the developers realised that if he still had a sword and shield there would be no reason to use the copy and paste gameplay of the echoes, the game’s new concept.

If you’re a Minecraft fan with a penchant for playing while wearing Sony’s PlayStation-branded VR goggles, prepare youself for some disappointing news: developer Mojang has announced it’s ending Minecraft’s PSVR support in March next year.
Minecraft originally gained PSVR support in September 2020, as a free upgrade for the PS4 version (this year’s PS5 edition doesn’t include similar support for PSVR 2). However, the studio has now confirmed the feature’s imminent demise in a new post on its website.
